Sony's new handheld will miss the Christmas rush in both the US and Europe...
Sony Corp's Executive Vice-President, Kaz Hirai has confirmed previous speculation that the PlayStation Vita will miss a pre-Christmas launch in the West, although the console will surface in Japan before the end of the year.
However, PS Vita will at least launch in Europe and the US before the end of March next year. Hirai specified an early 2012 launch and the handheld was originally announced for launch within the 2013 financial year.
According to an Associated Press report, Hirai has also dismissed speculation that Sony may be looking to introduce a price cut for the PS Vita to compete with the cut that Nintendo is introducing to its 3DS console this month.
"We packed so much into the device and made it very affordable," said Hirai. "There is no need to lower the price just because somebody else that happens to be in the video game business decided that they were going to lower their price.”
The entry-level PS Vita SKU (without support for 3G) is pegged to go on sale for £229.99 in the UK, which is the same price that retailers started selling the 3DS at when it launched last March. Following Nintendo's announcement that this price will be cut by a third, the 3DS is now expected to be priced around the £150 mark when the reduction comes into effect on August 12th.
