Sony lifts the lid on its PSP successor at E3 2011...
The upcoming successor to the PSP, which has been previously known only as the NGP (Next Generation Portable), was shown off at Sony's glitzy E3 press conference in LA. The device has been named the PlayStation Vita, meaning 'life' in Latin, and will retail at $249 when it comes out in late 2011. We understand that the UK price point will be around £235, though it was not mentioned in the conference itself.
As well as the traditional face buttons, the console features two rear touch panels, an interactive touch-screen, two analogue sticks and a couple of cameras allowing for the possible use of Alternate Reality Games. It looks slick in the famous gloss black finish that is so synonymous with Sony's branding and will also release in a 3G format, costing around $50/£40 more than the standard wifi-only model.
PlayStation Vita will also feature cross-platform implementation with the PlayStation 3, including cloud saves, co-operative play and content sharing. This was shown in the game Ruin, which is currently the working title of a fantasy action brawler being developed for the platform. Other titles announced for the Vita include Uncharted: Golden Abyss, ModNation Racers, LittleBigPlanet and Street Fighter X Tekken, which was also revealed to include inFamous's Cole as a playable character.
