Itâ??s surprising to think that eight years after the re-emergence of the teen horror genre in the movies, a similar style of game hasnâ??t been developed. Sure, there has been an influx of survival horror titles that have developed into franchises such as the Resident Evil and Silent Hill series, but there hasnâ??t been a Scream or Jeepers Creepers style of Survival Horror game released.
This is all set to change with the release of Obscure, which follows the story of five teenagers trapped in their US High School, left with the task of trying to escape with their lives, whilst at the same time trying to uncover the dark secret of the school.
The atmosphere of a dark and foreboding school has been captured well, and the sound design is also very good. A neat addition is that players can attach torches to guns with the use of sticky tape, which means that you can light up areas and aim at the same time. The controls seem to work quite well too, and are fairly intuitive.
Players can switch to any of the five teenagers (once they have found them) and each one has a special talent, whether itâ??s the ability to pick locks or hint that items are still waiting to be discovered in the various rooms. Thereâ??s a lot of running about involved as you try to find various objects, or try to escape from some of the strange creatures in the game.
The game isnâ??t the most original however, and almost feels like Silent Hill: The Teen Years, but itâ??s quite enjoyable and provides a few moments that make you jump. Itâ??s very much like a video game equivalent of the teen-horror genre - whilst it does make you jump in places, it wonâ??t give you nightmares.
