UK Format Sales Revealed News

GAME keeps tabs on what format has sold what, although the figures are a little old...

Following a record breaking year in both revenue and profit, UK retailer GAME has released details on the lifetime sales of the major formats in the country

It makes for a largely unsurprising read, with Wii leading the charge at 4.9 million units to-date since its launch back in December 2006. Despite making an appearance beforehand, the Xbox 360 is in second spot with 3.2 million units, while the PlayStation3 has sold 1.9 million since March 2007.

Looking at the handhelds, GAME reports that the Nintendo DS has sold 8.8 million units in its various incarnations, while the PSP has shifted a considerable 3.2 million units.

Of course, all of the current-gen formats have still got a long way to go to match the success of the PlayStation2, which GAME suggests has shifted over 10 million units since launching back in 2000.

All of the figures correspond to those released back on January 31st 2009 during a previous public trading update from the UK retailer, so expect the figures to have been inflated a little in the following months.
