The BBC's technology editor explains the reason why Nintendo gains a headstart in the home entertainment race...

Following yesterday's surprising announcement between Nintendo and the BBC, which promptly left both Microsoft and Sony stuttering on the home entertainment starting line, further details on the agreement have today come to light.

Speaking in his blog, Darren Waters Editor of the BBC News Technology has revealed that both Microsoft and Sony wanted control over the iPlayer, and as a result lost out to Nintendo in becoming the first console to offer a diverse selection of online video content.

Waters blog cites the Beeb's Erik Huggers, who claims: "If you want to get on the PlayStation or Xbox, they want control of the look, the feel and the experience; they want it done within their shop, and their shop only."

Confirming that neither the PlayStation3 or current Wii web browser support the version of Flash utilised by the iPlayer, Water's blog further states that not only are Nintendo rectifying this but also introducing a specific channel for the iPlayer on the Wii menu.

Water suggests that Sony will likely update the PS3's firmware to support the iPlayer, but is slightly more scathing when it comes to Microsoft, suggesting that the "free iPlayer service probably doesn't hold too much commercial interest for Microsoft". Of course, this is a blog with personal opinions and is in no way an official statement from the BBC.

It doesn't matter how good the Wii console is, all the games are rubbish.

family bowling

Family fishing

Family execise

Family necrophilia

There is no point improving the console unless they sort the games out

Yeah, apparently Ninty are working on a new console with graphics to match PS3/60, and motion controllers/games are being created by PS3/60, so its all gonna be good in the end eh! :)

I really would like to see a Nintendo console with HD support.  It's the standard, they really do need to catch up.

What Bing popups - are you on about MS search engine?  If you're on about the textual ads, just avoid hovering your cursor above em - simple.

Information doesn't drop from the trees I'm afraid...

Just outputting to HD won't be enough - there will have to be increases to the Wii's GPU and memory to make the visuals look sufficiently better.  the Wii HD is just a pipedream invented by an anlyst that doesn't actually get that many things right...
