A playable version of the new system will be unveiled at this year's E3...

As part of its 2011 financial report, Nintendo has officially confirmed that it's developing a new home console which is due to launch in 2012 and will be unveiled to the public at this year's E3 in June.

According to a note from the financial report, the console will be playable at E3 and Nintendo has promised to reveal specifications at the expo too, although no further info info on the system has been announced at this stage.

This means that previous rumours, including speculation of built-in HD touch-screens for the controllers, a new motion control scheme, and hardware to rival the PS3/Xbox 360, remain unsubstantiated.

At this point, all we've got to go on is a comment that Satoru Iwata, Nintendo's President made earlier today, which appears to rule out 3D technology similar to the company's recently released 3DS handheld.

“We would like to propose a new approach to home video game consoles [with the Wii successor],” Iwata said, according to Bloomberg. “It’s difficult to make 3D images a key feature, because 3D televisions haven’t obtained wide acceptance yet.”

Update: Satoru Iwata has confirmed in a press conference that the new console won't arrive within the current financial year, which effectively means it's due for release between April 1st 2012 and December 31st 2012 (Thanks, Andriasang).

why does everyone who thinks they know what their talking about go on about the ps3 and the 360 using a microsoft graphics subroutine only found in PC's "Direct-X" and why DX-9 when the 360 launched at the same time as vista (DX-10), why dont all you morons just get a DX-9 graphics card and try to run the latest games like dirt 3 @ 1080p, im almost certain you cant or it'll run but at a much jerkier frame rate and certainly no where near 30 fps let alone 60 fps.

now for all you moronic PC fanboys out there did you forget some PC games still use open GL 3.0 i mean come on how old is that, or what about D3D (Direct 3D), grapics routines and proccess is done completly differently on PC's compared to consoles they are deicated games machines and with age the graphic on them gradually gets pushed right to their limits where as most PC gamers barely puch their graphcs cards to the limit as there upgrading every 12 months to the latest hardware ( a bit pointless unless youve got money to waste ).

sorry tom but if you think sony or microsoft demonstrated that everyone wanted HD this past gen then by that your theory is flawed, nintendo bought somthing new rather than a graphics update and the Wii quite literally dominated and still is dominating this gen using last gen graphics, what kinds of leaps forward do you expect there to be when 1080p will be the standard for at least another 10 years.

so far this gen even owning both a ps3 and 360 id still say the wii is the most inovative console this gen and nintendo obviously understand what people rather than just gamers want, also there is at least a further 9 months before the Wii U is even out so further improvements can be made.

This is a real big deal for Nintendo, you see the market is a fast place for change and innovation to take place. Most people want something modern and unique not yesterday. The PS3 and 360 were great when they came out but today they are ancient in the CPU and GPU area not to mention they are direct x 9 capable which hasn't been used in game development for years. If recent rumors are true and If Nintendo comes out with a next generation system next year with significant processing power, cutting edge graphics, HD compatibility and other unthinkable innovations then this can be a real game changer for Nintendo.
