Nintendo Confirms North American Date For DS Lite News

By Jon Wilcox on 04/05/2006 Nintendo of America announces a mid-June release date for more compact version of the Nintendo DS...

Nintendo has today confirmed a release date of June 11th 2006 for the launch of Nintendo DS Lite, the latest version of the company's next-gen handheld, in North America. Priced at $129 (£70), the device, which is a third smaller and a fifth lighter than the original DS, will also include a number of further design changes with the built-in mic re-situated to the centre and the Start/Select buttons also moved to a better position.

In addition, four brightness levels will be available, together with a stylus 1cm longer and 1mm wider than before.

The release of the new version will come less than a month after the launch of New Super Mario Bros, the first original 2D Super Mario title since Super Mario World on the SNES back in the early-1990s.

"DS Lite and New Super Mario Bros. represent a double shot of gaming excellence," says Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America's Executive Vice President of Sales & Marketing. "We've got something for both lovers of beautiful, new gadgets and fans of old-school gaming."

A release date for the DS Lite in Europe is yet to be announced as of yet, although it would be nice to think that the latest addition to Nintendo's family of handhelds won't take too long to get here.

We'll have more news shortly...

I once owned a DS lite and spent many hours playing it. I think it is ideal for the younger gaming generation although for me personally the psp is far better. I think in comparrison to the psp the nintendo ds is slightly overpriced.

I play pirated DS ROMs and I don't live in the US - and I know of at least one other person who does. Since Christmas 2006 I also calculate that I have spent approximately £700.00 on games software, £700.00 on hardware and about £200.00 in subs for a popular fantasy-based MMORPG. Hardly justification for illegally downloading games then, but, I would argue, with 6 family members actively gaming and pursuing an interest in some of the latest games technology, we ARE consumers and we do spend a high proportion of our income on games and consoles. And my family is not unique. My justification is that Microsoft would rather users pirated their software than that of their competitors. Although less disingenuously and more likely is the fact that I do it because I can. None of my other consoles are chipped and I buy legal copies of PC games and pay my subs to play online. I'm not naïve and I know Nintendo is a business and needs to make a profit to survive, but even though DS games are generally less expensive in comparison to other formats, they are not available at pocket money prices and, let's be honest, they are aimed primarily at kids. And hey, while I'm at it, I used to tape music in the 1980s - but the music industry is still going strong...
