Concept art and the first details of Lara Croft's next adventure get splurged across the net...

A heap of info on the as yet unannounced, next Tomb Raider adventure for Lara Croft have spread across the net like wildfire, revealing a reboot for the series in what appears to be an origin story of "a young and inexperienced" Lara.

It seems Ms. Croft will be springing into action across an open world island filled with "mysterious" enemies that appear to have scythes for arms (see concept art). Some of the leaked details also allude to elements of survival-horror gameplay across this remote Japanese island.

This info and concept art was originally dug-up by 4 Player Co-op but, along with a number of other US sites, the outlet has since removed these leaked images from its site at the request of Eidos and its representative companies.

Nonetheless, the info was around long enough for the following game description to find its way across the intertubes:

"When a sudden storm destroys her research vessel, a young and inexperienced Lara Croft finds herself stranded on a mysterious and remote island hidden off the shores of Japan.

"Despite several signs of various inhabitants the island is oddly deserted, and an uneasy feeling settles in as strange sounds emerge from the shadows. With only her determination, inner strength, and resourcefulness to help her, Lara must overcome the challenges of a harsh and unforgiving journey that will take her across a vast island wilderness and deep into the claustrophobic and menacing underground tombs from the island's past.

"As she struggles to prevail through brutal combat encounters and treacherous exploration, Lara will be pushed to her limits and forced to adapt to her situation in order to survive and escape from the lethal predators that stalk her every move."

A list of possible new features for the game was also contained in the leak and clearly refers to the aforementioned open-world, survival horror, and origin story elements of the game:

  • Hunt or Be Hunted: Evade, outsmart, trick and kill the mysterious enemies that hunt you as prey.
  • Survival Action: Brutally attack and defend yourself as you fight to survive through visceral one-on-one melee combat.
  • Strategic Weapons: Gain an advantage in combat by finding an array of different melee and ranged weapons including a variety of guns, and the hunter's ultimate weapon, the bow.
  • Creative Survival: React and adapt to the island by using only that which you can salvage from the environment like climbing axes, rope, and machetes that can be used to unlock new traversal and combat gameplay options.
  • Free Movement: Scramble up a vertical cliff wall, sprint and leap across a huge chasm, steer mid-air to land a misdirected jump: There is no one right way to traverse, survive, and explore the harsh environment of the island.
  • One Cohesive World: The diverse multi-region island is an open playground alive with creatures, weather, and natural events.
  • Origin Story: The new Tomb Raider concept reboots the franchise by exploring Lara Croft's transformation into a hardened adventurer as you unravel the story behind the island's mysterious past.

i agree that i don't particularly want it to be a horror

i would love the adventure and a mysterious island like an island from japan well it's meant to be anyway but the creatures don't scare me but they do look like something out of silent hill the ring and the grudge but am excited about what the story and action will be like

not that keen on lara croft and the guardian of light the graphics are good but i liked the close rand of tomb raider not the far range of it.

Interesting but i lost interest on the last one, it didn't really stand out plus a load of bugs plagued the previous installments, altho i will hold furthur judgement until the final product, let's see if croft can return or let drake rule the roost forever! ;)

Hey all, it's Keir from Crystal.

Just to clarify, Crystal are working on two games at the moment. This one isn't called Tomb Raider ;)

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light is something new, exciting and different, we'll be releasing some juicy info soon.

honestly, this sounds good but if it has more gore than strategy and adventure than the makers have ruined the best series of games i have ever played and i won't get anymore that come out unless they are as classic as the original ones.

Yeah, Lara Croft doing survival horror is like John McClane doing a RomCom. No thanks...

I dunno, please do not make Tomb Raider a survival horror game now! It's all about the adventure, not the horror! There needs to be a LOT more info in the near future to change my mind about this game.

I think this is a BIG mistake... Tomb Raider has ALWAYS been an adventurous, T-rated, gunsplay game, NOT a scary, M-rated, gory, survival game... It's SUCH a disappiontment to see Tomb Raider go down the drain.=(

I have no intention of starting an argument, I'm just stating my TRUE feelings towards this game... I know it's not confirmed yet, but Tomb Raider has NEVER become THIS brutal.
