EA's Need For Speed series puts the pedal to the metal and races past 100 million lifetime sales...

EA has announced that its Need For Speed series has passed through the milestone of 100 million lifetime sales, collating an impressive $2.7 billion (£1.63 billion) in total sales revenues along the way.

The arcade racing game series has been iterated through 15 separate titles across 14 different platforms since its inception in 1994, with gamers logging over 279 billion miles on the various race tracks and roads featured throughout the series' history (how EA figured out that stat is anybody's guess).

"Few videogame franchises ever reach the 100M units mark, so this is a huge honour. We have millions of fans to thank for driving us to this milestone," said Frank Gibeau, President of the EA Games label. "With the launch of Need for Speed Shift and the upcoming release of Need for Speed Nitro, we hope to continue to deliver the most entertaining, action-packed racing experiences."
