Three instalments due to hit in 2009, as Need for Speed splits into 'sim', 'casual', and 'online'...

After years of failing to deliver on its glory days, Electronic Arts has today confirmed that the Need for Speed franchise is undergoing a dramatic overhaul in 2009, with three titles arriving before the end of the year.

The revelation, which comes off the back of further staff cuts from the publishing giant, will see Need for Speed become a sim on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, a casual racer on Wii and Nintendo DS, and a PC online racer.

Speaking with Eurogamer, EA revealed that heading to the Microsoft and PlayStation console will be Need for Speed Shift, developed by Slightly Mad Games, which will place a far greater emphasis on sim racing – and not more underground racing/modding.  Meanwhile, Wii and DS owners will get to grips with the arcade-racer, Need for Speed Nitro, in development at EA Montreal.  According to EA, Nitro will be unlike past instalments of the game...whatever that means.  Finally, and following a similar route as Battlefield Heroes, will be Free 4 Play title, Need for Speed World Online.  The PC-based racer will be released in Asia first, with a Western launch in the winter, and feature micro-transactions.

It seems that for Xbox 360 and PS3 gamers, Need for Speed will finally be returning to its roots...
