Midway announces more details on their 2005 action/adventure release set in the MK universe…

Following on from our report last week on the next instalment in the MK series, Midway have today unveiled some details about Shaolin Monks.

Set in the Mortal Kombat universe, Shaolin Monks is said to be similar to the recently released MK: Deception, with background interaction (such as acid pits, living trees, spiked ceilings, etc) and new fatalities, but wrapped in an action/adventure style, which will include action based puzzles. The game will feature both a Single-Player and Multiplayer game, but what form the multiplayer game will take is, for the moment, unknown.

Unveiling the details, David F. Zucker, President and Chief Executive Officer of Midway, said, â??Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks is an Action/Adventure title that will help to expand the already wildly popular Mortal Kombat universe well beyond the fighting genreâ?¦Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks is also our first step toward delivering something that Mortal Kombat fans have been calling for: a new game set in the Mortal Kombat universe every year. We are planning our Mortal Kombat release schedule with the expectation that we will deliver a new Mortal Kombat title annually.â?

Mortal Kombat Creator, Ed Boon, enthused, â??For the first time ever, Mortal Kombat fanatics will get to explore all the mythos and rumors of the Mortal Kombat universe from an entirely new perspective. Action/Adventure fans will be blown away by the intuitive kombat system, puzzle solving and epic storyline that can be experienced in either the single player mode or through co-op play.â?

Judging by the screenshots Liu Kang is in the game; whether Shaolin Monks is set before MK: Deadly Alliance, or whether his appearance is down to any other reason, is for the moment, anyoneâ??s guess.

The gameâ??s release is yet to be made specific; however, it is scheduled for release sometime in Autumn 2005.

Weâ??ll have more on Shaolin Monks shortlyâ?¦
