Chart Track's Top 20 Games Of 2009 Revealed News

Chart Track has announced its game charts for the whole of last year, revealing that Activision's Modern Warfare 2 has unsurprisingly come out on top. This news comes alongside Activision's announcement that Modern Warfare 2 has topped $1 billion (£615 million) in worldwide revenues since its release last November.

Here's Chart Track's top 20 for the year, which confusingly accounts for only 11 games that were released during 2009 (nine of them were released in previous years) and demonstrates just how barren last year's schedules were thanks to Modern Warfare 2 scaring off most of the major Christmas releases into 2010 launch windows:

Interestingly, excluding Nintendo titles, there's only one first-party exclusive between Microsoft and Sony on the top 20. Forza 3 came in at No.14, while Sony failed to post any title on the top 20 despite the releases of Uncharted 2 and Killzone 2 last year.

These two first-party exclusives did feature on the PS3 top 20 though (Killzone 2 at No.4 and Uncharted 2 at No.5), while Media Molecule's LittleBigPlanet exposed its impressively long tail of sales once again by coming in at No.7.

All three of these titles charted above CoD: World at War on the PS3 chart, which was likewise the case for Forza 3 and Halo 3: ODST on the Xbox 360 chart. Given that World at War charted at No.9 on the all-formats chart, this provides some scope for how successful these first-party exclusives were on their native platforms compared to the all-format sales.

In the handheld arena, GTA: Chinatown Wars' appearance on the DS chart at No.19 illustrated how the game has struggled on the platform. While many commentators have suggested that this is because of a lack of core DS gamers, Chinatown Wars' performance on the PSP seems to indicate otherwise.

The game failed to chart on the PSP top 20, despite the fact that both Liberty and Vice City Stories (GTA games that were released in 2005 and 2006 respectively) appeared at the No.7 and No.8 spots (again, respectively) on the chart.

This indicates that it wasn't so much the lack of core gamers on the DS that accounted for low sales, as much as the game itself. However, while Chinatown Wars' old-school style may not have pleased consumers, it certainly pleased us enough to award the game a 9/10.
