Activision Never Wanted Modern Call Of Duty News

Call of Duty may never have entered modern times if Activision executives had had their way.  In an interview with Official PlayStation Magazine (reported by CVG), Infinity Ward's Vince Zampella remarks that the developer wanted to move away from WWII with Call of Duty 2.

"With Call of Duty 2, we were dead set against it being World War 2," Zampella claimed, "but Activision really wanted it, the compromise sort of being that we'd get some dev kits for consoles in exchange for doing a World War 2 game.

Call of Duty 2 was acclaimed as a magnificent launch title for the Xbox 360, despite Activision believing that the team was a PC-centric studio.  TVG attended a review event at the time, when Infinity Ward was demonstrating a build on the Xbox 360 despite the reviews being based on PC code.

However, if Activision had their way entirely then Call of Duty could have still been stuck in the trenches of WWII.

Zampella later claimed, "... Activision also did not want Modern Warfare. They thought working on a modern game was risky and, 'oh my god you can't do that, it's crazy!' They were doing market research to show us we were wrong the whole time".

The rest is history, Modern Warfare went on to become one of the best selling video games in recent times, notching up over 14 million sales in the process.
