The first snippets of story detail have appeared in a product listing for Mass Effect 2...

The first details of Mass Effect 2's story have surfaced from a product listing on Amazon.com, which paints a fairly grim picture of the sequel's universe and humans' place in it.

SPOILER WARNING!

"The second chapter in the Mass Effect trilogy takes you to the darkest reaches of space, where you must uncover the mystery behind the disappearance of humans across many worlds," the listing reads. "Prepare yourself for a suicide mission to save mankind. Travel the galaxy to assemble a team of soldiers and combat specialists, and launch an all-out assault on the heart of enemy territory."

Okay, perhaps the spoiler warning for a product description was a little excessive, but all that talk of a "suicide mission" and "the disappearance of humans across many worlds" is a lot juicier than what we're used to finding in game descriptions.

Mass Effect 2's previously released teaser trailer seems to suggest that Commander Shepard, the first game's protagonist, has been killed in action while the looming figure of a Geth soldier certainly appears to be significant and, given the details above, it would make a lot of sense.

However, Amazon's product listing also notes that "Deep character customization options let you create your own vision of Commander Shepard", in Mass Effect 2 and that, "The second act of BioWare's epic sci-fi trilogy continues the story of Commander Shepard and humanity's first steps onto the galactic stage."

Perhaps he's not dead after all. We'll keep eavesdropping on Systems Alliance meetings and let you know if we hear anything.
