One of Capcom’s greatest fighters is set to hit the Xbox and PlayStation 2 we sit down with the developers and have a jolly old chat.

To most it will look like another colourful bash with formulised screens, cast and action but to the aficionados of fights games this will be eagerly anticipated!

Fighting games on the PS2 are plentiful but when it comes to the top name for this genre of game then no one does it better than Capcom! Derek dela Fuente spoke with the team creating the game, Marvel vs Capcom 2, also on the XBOX. Marvel vs. Capcom 2 builds on an already fanatical fan base and with more of the same plus loads of characters and improvements galore on offer in this sequel - a very special console game could be in the making.

This particular team (there are currently over 10 people, not including those who worked on the original arcade game) working on Marvel vs Capcom 2 has developed mainly fighting games in the past. Many of these titles feature characters that are available to play in Marvel vs. Capcom 2. Therefore their considerable experience has enabled Marvel vs. Capcom 2 to offer a total of 56 playable characters and the most flexible game-play ever seen in this genre. [A Capcom quote]

At the beginning of the game players have access to 24 playable characters. From the Marvel universe and players can choose from Cable, Marrow, Cyclops, Captain America, Dr. Doom, Rogue, Psylocke, Wolverine (bone claw version), Iceman, Spider-Man, Hulk or Venom. The line-up of Capcom characters includes Jill, Tron, Rubyheart, Son Son, Amingo, Hayato, Sakura, Guile, Ryu, Zangief, Anakaris and Strider. As players meet certain conditions they will gain access to many hidden and secret characters.

This, like many Capcom titles, comes direct from the monster arcade machine and getting it onto consoles is not a mere case of porting code over! “The most important thing when converting graphics is not to lose any of the game-play. We have polished the graphics and sound to give home console owners an even more involving experience than the arcade version!”

The team delved a little deeper into this process, not wanting to cover over all ‘techy’! “The hardware spec is very important; since home consoles now have equal or higher spec than arcade machines, so it is much easier for us to implement the perfect conversion. However, each platform has specialised aspects which means we may have to tweak each version in different ways to achieve the same result. Our goal is to make this conversion better quality than the original, instead of trying to improve on the already top quality game-play; we’ve added extra features to make full usage of both consoles’ power. Of course higher spec consoles give us much greater possibilities when designing new games. This has instilled optimism and excitement throughout the team and we look to the future with a very positive attitude.”

“We’d also like to add that Capcom has always been at the forefront of the fighting game genre and even though there are many beat ‘em ups available now, we feel Capcom’s fighting games always highlight something new. We believe this proves that Capcom has the power to add innovation even if many games are released in this genre.”

So with Marvel vs. Capcom 2 including all the features from the arcade version you are spoilt for choice which character to pick and what mode of player to start with. You can choose a character to experience three-on-three fighting mayhem. And players can perform limitless Hyper Combos, Crossover Counters, Advancing Guard and Super Jumps, all popular features from the acclaimed ‘v’ series.

Everyone must have a favourite they choose all the time and this question was put to the team: “Our favourites include Spiderman, Ryu, Jill and Wolverine. However, our favourite special move has to be Cyclops Mega Opti-blast.”

Talking of moves, you will need a good and robust pad. The team is paying special attention to the movements of all the characters and so with a good 5 months before release there is time for even more impressive animations and ideas to be implemented.

Marvel vs. Capcom 2 offers the following enhancements and the return of popular modes of play including:

- Real 3-on-3 tag team battle!
- More than 50 playable characters
- Team Hyper Combo - Allows three characters to perform Super Combos successively
- Snap Back - Forces opponents to change characters
- Assist Type Select - Players choose their favourite assist attack
- Crossover Attack - Players can change characters in the thick of battle
- Crossover Assist - Waiting character rushes on screen to assist your playing character
- Crossover Counter - Waiting character performs lifesaving counterattacks
- Crossover Combination - Three characters perform a Super Combo simultaneously
- Advancing Guard - Allows players to push back their opponent

The uniqueness of the game is not only the cast and its moves but also the expertise that is going into the game and they believe they have a consciousness that other developers haven’t. They, in effect, just love creating games whilst they appreciate consumers constantly demand new games and the team felt they needed to overcome this ideology by making Marvel vs. Capcom 2 one of the best fighting games ever. This determination has given Marvel vs. Capcom 2 a new lease of life.

The screen sizes on PS2 and XBox are different, but Capcom is making adjustments to make sure that movement will look exactly the same on both consoles. “You will be pleased to hear the frame rate is 60Hz. We are not taking out any of the background movement to achieve this.”

Like all the best games there are several hidden features included in the game. One of the most important being the 32 hidden characters you can unlock.

Finally, ‘sum up the experience players will face’ was an easy one from the team but the screenshots tell the story of what looks like a great fighting game where the challenge is so varied and the skill need to win through would take ages!.

“We think players will be very satisfied with the number of characters they can use, 56 in all! We would like everyone to think of this game as a huge theme park with 56 different attractions. You can find out the characteristics of each character as well as individual special moves. We have modified the game balance and character balance, from the arcade machine, so this game will offer guaranteed Capcom quality.”
