Reports suggest EA set to table a staggering licensing bid to gain exclusive rights to players from the NHL…

A report in The Sports Business Journal today highlighted an alleged agreement between Electronic Arts and Players Inc. â?“ the NFL players association â?“ to grant EA the exclusive rights to feature all NFL players within their forthcoming titles.

The report claims that the deal is worth a staggering $1billion across four years, making it quite possibly the largest sports licensing deal ever, and will ensure that only EA American Football titles will be the only ones to feature licensed and accurate players.

Naturally this news will come as a huge blow to rival publishers, particularly SEGA with its ESPN brand, who having been trounced previously by EA is stepping up once again to challenge the might of EA and Madden.

If the deal was set to go through it would certainly put EA into a monopolistic position, and could suggest that further deals will be made alongside the same lines in other sporting genres.

Currently representatives from EA and Players Inc. are refusing to confirm the deal; however weâ??d expect more details to become apparent soon.
