E3'08: Sony Unveils MAG News

The team behind SOCOM is poised to deliver an action game with space for up to 256 players...

MAG

We've heard of games offering 60+ player slots for online multiplayer before. Battlefield 2 and Star Wars: Battlefront 2 (on PC) come to mind, while Resistance 2 is poised to bring 60 player slots to its online component later this year.

However, 256 players sounds like a bit of an excessive jump to us, but apparently not to Sony and Zipper Interactive, who unveiled MAG (a working title/acronym standing for Massive Action Game) for the PlayStation 3 during Sony's E3 press conference.

Andy Beaudoin, Lead Designer at Zipper, explained that these 256 players will be split-up into 8 player squads, while individual characters' skills can be increased with continued play.

Given Zippers track record with the SOCOM games (which have catered for as many as 32 players online), we're inclined to take Beaudoin at his word and give the ambitious 256 player game a tentative thumbs up.

Yeah the graphics do look good, I like that its from Zipper who did a good job with SOCOM titles that makes me breathe easy that it may actually run smoothly. Here's hoping...
