Media Molecule Co-founder, Alex Evans speaks candidly about a possible sequel to last year's LittleBigPlanet...
There's no doubting LittleBigPlanet's success: a stratospheric Metacritic score of 95 and official worldwide sales figures of over 1.3 million units as of last January. The game also remained in the UK top 40 chart until the end of March this year thanks to price reductions at retail.
LittleBigPlanet's user-generated content is also something that gamers have warmed to, creating approximately 2 million levels for the game so far, which compares to 725,000 as of last February. This clearly indicates that despite slow initial sales, LittleBigPlanet's long-term appeal has not waivered.
It's a point that Media Molecule Co-founder, Alex Evans talked about in a recent interview with gi.biz where he spoke about the possibility of making current user-generated content backwards compatible in a prospective sequel.
"We're getting on for 2 million levels that have been published now," Evans revealed. "If you look at online distribution for LBP, when the sequel comes along, what do we do with all that content? I think we can give consumers lots of stuff that you couldn't in a traditional game. We can give them backwards compatibility with those levels, and then when you decide on how you're going to sell that to them."
He does seem to suggest that LittleBigPlanet 2 is inevitable by saying "when the sequel comes along" rather than, "if the sequel comes along". Evans was then asked whether this meant LBP2 was in the works, to which he answered:
"Well, I'd love there to be a sequel, put it that way. But that's not an announcement - although I will say that the entire team is working on LBP."
Sounds like there's going to be a sequel then.

@Post 4: Couldn't agree more, and you're not the only one still playing. The servers are obviously still hot with people creating levels. Two million and counting!

how cool!! Â little big planet is literally the ONLY game i've continued playing after 3 or 4 months. Â i play it twice a week even now! Â the new features on LBP2 look quite simply, stunning! Â hurry up and release it haha. Â (but don't rush it, obviously lol)

That sounds like a good opinion you have. I've got to say, I didn't know that water is on the way. That's usually something that developers introduce in a sequel (well, either that or the ability to swim in it).
Given that the major updates for LBP have been free so far, it's got to be said that Media Molecule could be one of, if not the most committed developer to its community.
Perhaps Media Molecule is making enough money out of micro-transactions (e.g. downloadable costumes and stuff) that they can keep supporting LBP indefinitely without the need to expand and do a sequel.

well it depends how much they can add to the actual engine via updates i think. Â i know water is on the way, which is exciting. Â if they can do dramatic big changes like that then it's all good imo. Â

I heard an interesting piece of gossip about Alex Evans on the weekend - apparently he's gone all showbiz on his old friends...
Inside source told me that one ;-)
