Left 4 Dead 'Survival' DLC Will Be Free News
Valve promises to provide its first instalment of Left 4 Dead DLC completely free of charge to gamers...
By Gwynne DixonPosted: 12/02/2009
Set for release this coming spring and boasting a new game mode and further campaigns, Valve's first portion of Left 4 Dead downloadable content will be available to gamers completely free of charge upon its release.
This 'Survival' DLC has been so called because it includes a new Survival game mode (we're envisioning something like Gears of War 2's Horde, which would be super cool), as well as two new campaigns for L4D's Versus Mode called Death Toll and Dead Air.
For those of you who haven't picked up L4D yet, the game will be available at retail as a Critic's Choice Edition this spring, which makes sense given the games score of 90 on Metacritic. This edition of the game will include access to all of the content in Valve's 'Survival' pack.

not at all valve is full of bs and i will tell you why. qoute:"It's not like we're [Valve is] looking at this as, 'Oh my god, we need some money, we're going to charge,' obviously, or we'd do it on the PC!!!! he says...now why would someone buy crash course for the pc when they get all sorts of maps for free already pc version has all knid of downloadable campaigns made by the comunnity. SO DUH of course you would charge PC users because why buy this 30 min campaign. it would be dumb on valve to try to charge.but xbox on the other has none of these maps period so it's a good way to hustle us outta our money

When did we say EA does have the publishing rightsfor Left 4 Dead? Clearly Valve controls the intellectual property of all the games its developed.
Left 4 Dead was distributed via the EA Partners program (similarly to Crysis and Brutal Legend), which basically allows developers to maintain creative control of their game and have it distributed by EA.
However, Gabe Newell said before Left 4 Dead was released that if a PS3 version of L4D did get developed, then it would be ported by an EA team (as was the case with The Orange Box on PS3). This does not mean that EA would take the publishing rights for that port, although it would undoubtedly take a cut of the profits.
