Google To Acquire Valve??? News

Online reports emerge suggesting that the search engine giant could be about to pounce on Valve...

Left 4 Dead

Movie studios, music TV channels - it seems like everyone want a piece of the videogames industry today, and online reports are today suggesting that search engine giant, Google, could be about to enter the market too.

According to The Inquirer and 'well placed sources', Google is on the verge of acquiring Half-Life and Left 4 Dead developers, Valve Software, with an potential announcement at this week's Game Developers Conference in Austin, Texas.

Google's main interest in the firm apparently rests with Valve's Steam content distribution system, which has become increasing popular with publishers in the last couple of years as a way to digitally distribute their titles. So far, the likes of 2K Games, Eidos, and Activision have all signed up to Steam, alongside indie studios such as Introversion (Darwinia) and Media Molecule (Rag Doll Kung Fu).

Neither Google nor Valve has issued a statement on the reports, but the acquisition would certainly give Google a leg up in the ongoing battle for online supremacy against Microsoft.

SO DUH of course you would charge PC users because why buy this 30 min campaign. it would be dumb on valve to try to charge.but xbox on the other has none of these maps period so it's a good way to hustle us outta our money

When did we say EA does have the publishing rightsfor Left 4 Dead? Clearly Valve controls the intellectual property of all the games its developed.

Left 4 Dead was distributed via the EA Partners program (similarly to Crysis and Brutal Legend), which basically allows developers to maintain creative control of their game and have it distributed by EA.

However, Gabe Newell said before Left 4 Dead was released that if a PS3 version of L4D did get developed, then it would be ported by an EA team (as was the case with The Orange Box on PS3). This does not mean that EA would take the publishing rights for that port, although it would undoubtedly take a cut of the profits.
