Microsoft Details First Halo Wars DLC News

Microsoft has detailed the first portion of downloadable content for Halo Wars, entitled Strategic Options...

Halo Wars

Publisher Microsoft has released information on its first portion of DLC for its Halo Wars RTS, which is being readied for release in the "coming weeks" under the title 'Strategic Options'.

Three new modes will grace the multiplayer component of Halo Wars with the 'Strategic Options' add-on, as well as four new achievements worth a grand total of 100 Gamerscore points.

The three new modes will be Tug of War, Reinforcement, and Keepaway. The following are Microsoft's explanations of them:

  • Keepaway Mode is the Halo Wars adaptation of Capture the Flag. Teams will battle it out to capture a free-roaming Forerunner Sentinel to score points before the other team. Capture three sentinels to claim victory.
  • Tug of War Mode is all about having a stronger army than the opponent. Defeating enemies is essential, but success is determined by a combination of the army, buildings and resources left standing in the end.
  • In Reinforcement Mode, all active battle units are provided in successive waves. Players must adapt their tactics and use the ever-changing set of units to outwit and outlast the enemy.

Keepaway and Reinforcement sound fairly promising but Tug of War is a bit of a head scratcher. What's all this talk of the mode being, "about having a stronger army than the opponent" and, "Defeating enemies is essential"? We'd have assumed that much, although it'll be good to see the mode promote a more conservative plan of attack with the final tally of units and resources playing a more decisive role.

Thanks for a really insightful review, it was spot on. Ive really enjoyed this game so far, been a player of RTS for a few years. I think if you treat this game as a fun RTS to play with your mates over a couple of beers etc perfect.

I just got it and HATE it! I hope I can get my money back. It didn't climb the mountain for me. Can stress enough how disappointed I was. It doesn't even deserve to have the word HALO on the box.

If you want to select a single unit, just press 'A' on that unit.  Otherwise, RB and LB selects all local or global units.

Hope this helps Gaz.

being a huge fan of c&c games there was a few things i didnt like about the halo wars demo..like how you can only have 30 units on screen at once(could just be in the demo and not full game) and when you try to move a unit or tank past another unit it gets blocked and you have to move the other units out the way to clear the path..(in c&c the other units automatically moved out the way) and also how you cant pick individual units and move them one at a time. as far as i could see it only lets you move the whole army at once or all the units on screen at once..(correct me if im wrong on that one)..did anyone find the same things when they played it?? i'll still get the game as i think the full game will have ways round the issues i had with the demo ..
