The fourth 'true' instalment in the series is finally given a name, along with confirmation of its new features like the Music Studio...
Just a day ahead of Rock Band's timed exclusive launch on Xbox 360 in Europe, Activision and Red Octane have announced new details on Guitar Hero IV, now rechristened 'Guitar Hero World Tour'.
Besides expanding the instrumental skills of Guitar Hero gamers to match MTV Games' guitar, drums, microphone ensemble, World Tour is set to include a raft of new features that push the franchise in a new direction; for instance, the Music Studio. Having seen diehard fans hack their own songs and post the new vids on the likes of YouTube, it seems that developer Neversoft has takem notice, with the Music Studio allowing gamers to create their own GH masterpieces and share them across Xbox Live and PlayStation Network.
A new 'Battle of the Bands' mode will also feature, with up to eight players facing off for rock god supremacy.
"Guitar Hero has set the standard for music-based gaming and with Guitar Hero World Tour and the game's groundbreaking Music Studio, we are once again delivering unprecedented innovation that has the potential to revolutionize consumer generated music, much in the same way that video sharing hubs have driven user generated video," said Dusty Welch, Head of Publishing for RedOctane.
"With the introduction of our advanced high-quality new wireless instruments, in-depth customization options and advanced online functionality, the game enables music fans and gamers globally to share in the most social and expressive music experience ever."
Development duties for World Tour are been held by Neversoft on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, with Vicarious Visions looking after Wii. The outfit responsible for the Wii edition of Medal of Honor: Vanguard, Budcat, is handling the PlayStation 2 version; the Iowa City-based studio has previously looked after Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock on PS2.
