Activision announces a change in the series' direction with the release of Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock...

Guitar Hero: Warriors of RockAs widely expected, Guitar Hero is heading into new territory with the promise of an "epic rock journey to save rock n roll" - and presumably the fate of the flagging music genre.

Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock appears to be taking a step away from the casual/music market with the inclusion of an "all-new" story-driven Quest Mode, in addition to the biggest on-disc selection of rock music in a Guitar Hero game.

Quest Mode can be played using any combination of instruments and finds players embarking on something that bears more in common to a traditional video game experience.  Presumably with the music genre's recent failings, Activision is hoping core gamers will keep the franchise going.

From the stage of CBGBs to the molten lava fields of rock treachery, players have to transform into rock warriors, joining together to use their powers to help the Demi-God of Rock take down “The Beast” and save rock n’ roll.

Gene Simmons of KISS is onboard providing the voice of the Demi-God; he seems pretty enthused about it all:

“It was an honour and privilege to narrate Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock, even more so, to voice the Demi God," Simmons claimed.  "From the God of Thunder to the Demi-God, how cool is that..."

In addition, the game features a Quickplay+ mode which contains 13 gameplay challenges for every on-disc track as well as "most" downloadable and importable songs from Guitar Hero World Tour.

Challenges such as Band Streak, High Score, and Power Challenge are on offer, allowing players to rank up and unlock more rewards and content.  Activision promises "all-new" Challenge Leaderboards in order to "capture the outrageous scores that are capable with Quickplay+".

Finally, what would a new Guitar Hero game be without a new plastic guitar to play it with.  We're not entirely sure what to expect, so we'll leave it to the words of Activision:

"Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock delivers the next evolution in finger-fretting with an all-new, show-stopping guitar controller that was inspired and born from the game’s unique art style and specifically made for shredding."

The on-disc track selection will encompass more than 90 tracks, including hits from bands such as Black Sabbath, Megadeth and Slipknot.  Additionally, Dave Mustaine of Megadeth wrote and recorded “Sudden Death,” an original track for the game's Quest Mode’s storyline

The first songs off of Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock’s set list to be revealed are:

AFI – “Dancing Through Sunday”
Anthrax – “Indians”
Avenged Sevenfold – “Bat Country”
