Rumours suggest that a Beatles spin-off of the Guitar Hero series may be a distinct possibility...
As Guitar Hero: Aerosmith prepares to fill the gap between Guitar Hero III and IV releases, rumours are suggesting that a similar Guitar Hero: Beatles spin-off is a distinct possibility as Sony/ATV Publishing (which holds the rights to The Beatles' catalogue of music) confirms its interest.
Speaking to the LA Times about the possibility of a standalone Beatles Guitar Hero game, Sony/ATV Publishing's Chairman and Chief Executive Martin Bandier said, "It's something we have talked about and something I'd like to pursue."
The music publishers have traditionally been very guarded about The Beatles' back-catalogue of tracks. For example, a quick search on iTunes won't turn up any of the band's recorded albums because Sony/ATV Publishing still hasn't released them for digital download.
Recent developments have suggested that Sony/ATV is loosening its grip on these intellectual property rights. While the publishers had previously not allowed Beatles songs to be performed on the American Idol TV show, the most recent episodes have been dedicated exclusively to the band's music. Bandier referred to this as "a wonderful way to get this legendary music in front of an audience of 30 million people in an exciting way."
The fact that Bandier is opening up The Beatles' music to a possible Guitar Hero incarnation further confirms this loosening of the publisher's steadfast grip. Could this be anything to do with a certain high profile (and incredibly expensive) divorce settlement for the former band's bassist, singer and song writer, Paul McCartney?
Come on Activision, cash-in while the time is right!
