ArenaNet Confirms Guild Wars Bans News

Over four thousand players are banned from the subscription-free MMO for using 'bot' applications...

ArenaNet has confirmed that it has banned the accounts of four thousand Guild Wars players in the last week for using bot programs to mine for gold and items in the MMO.

In a statement released to the official Guild Wars website, the developer confirmed that the use of such programs were "strictly against" the User Agreement signed by players, and that they will remain "diligent on the matter of bot use, and will continue to take action against those accounts involved in such use."

Having been banned from taking part in one of the few subscription-free MMOs, it seems that there's going to be more than just one price to pay for cheaters of the game.

I think Guild Wars is a decent game (I only own the first installment.) I haven't yet played all the way through, but I do like the fact that it's basically a single-player game that you can play with friends. It's a very large single player game, too. The story gets a little murky after you get past the mountain ranges, though. I've been considering whether or not I'll purchase Factions or Nightfall. I'll probably check out Nightfall since it sounds more like the original game. They did a decent job with the game and have proven that you don't need to charge huge monthly fees to run an online MMORPG. It makes one thing "Then why does WoW and EQ cost so much per month just so I can keep my character from being deleted?"
