Polyphony Digital's Kazunori Yamauchi reveals that "GT6 is just new apps that run on the GT5 system"...

The big fish at Gran Turismo's Polyphony Digital studio, Kazunori Yamauchi has revealed that there will be a Gran Turismo 6 and gamers won't be waiting as long for it as they have been for GT5, which is due out in Japan during March of next year.

When asked by Autoweek whether there will be a GT6, Yamauchi responded, "Yes. You won't have to wait as long as you did for GT5. GT5 represents a whole new operating system. GT6 is just new apps that run on the GT5 system."

Speaking about that operating system, Yamauchi also explained the reasons why there's been a five year gap between GT4 and GT5:

"To make Gran Turismo 5, we threw away the legacy code from GT4 and started from scratch. It's been five years from [the release of] GT4, and that's the same amount of time it took to develop the first GT4. To create a game from scratch, that's the amount of time it takes to get it right."

And all of this has been done on a relatively small budget ($60 million, according to Yamauchi) for a triple A game with a five year dev cycle. In comparison, the production cost for Rockstar's GTA IV has been estimated at around $100 million.

"There are other games that cost more," said Yamauchi. "Considering the size and scale of the game, I think it's probably a fairly small amount."

Although there aren't any plans for GT5 DLC at this stage according to Yamauchi, he did concede that some will probably be released "eventually". The legendary developer also brought out some fighting talk against Turn 10's Forza 3.

"I was watching the guys at our company trying [Forza 3] out in the office," Yamauchi explained. "I tried it a little bit. It's very similar in a lot of aspects to Gran Turismo. Some base components of the game are very different from Gran Turismo. It's a little bit different from what a simulator is. You can feel it when you drive it."

Rise of Games spotted a brochure allegedly handed out during the event, which details a Q4 2009 release and the fact that the full game boasts over 1000 different vehicles to get your hands on.

lol 1000 variations of vehicles in the game not 1000 totally different cars maybe 400 different car models/makes though to be honest any racing game that lets you customise and tune cars means it has an infinate number of cars especially as no 1 car customised/tued up personally can be exactly the same on somone elses game unless they tell them the exact spec/setup of that car.

So I'm confused... Istead of ever releasing a game they have made 2 pre-games to keep people interested??? Sounds like the develpoers are having problems following through with their promises...

look releasing a game of this nature early just cause a few of you are inpatient and cant wait till polyphony feels the game is right, this game is huge in comparison to forza 3 fuel ect the prolouge was just a pressure release just so people could see how the games evolving. the main game will have hundreds of cars loads of tracks as expected from a gt game but like killzone 2 this will still be in development for some time to come (segaboy's right a late 2009 early 2010 is a good estimate).

i know killzone 2 is out but how long was it in development is what i was using as an example, releasing the game now would be like comitting suicide, the game would still be full of bugs and glitches and from what we have come to expect from big game developers is that they like to get there games as close to perfection as possible, just dont make them rush it by asking for it now they know there high demand for it thats why there getting it as good as they can, and trust me when this game comes out it wont dissapoint.

oh lastly this game is being made by a japanese firm so why shouldnt it come out in japan first, im sure if you were a game dev studio you know where to release you game first

We've all been waiting a very long time for the actual release of GT5. It's been a while and I think it's time they stopped making Prologues- there's been enough suspence. When it comes out it will definetly be a must buy though.
