Gran Turismo 2 may be restricted by the specifications of the format it is on. Gran Turismo 2000 isn’t.
Gran Turismo 2 may be restricted by the specifications of the format it is on. Gran Turismo 2000 isn’t. Not by a long way. When I first saw the screenshots of this game, I couldn’t believe it, it looked as good as the FMV in the intro to Gran Turismo, when seeing it in motion I was awestruck by the detail on the cars, tracks everything. This game could easily be the most spectacular driving game ever produced, as well as being the most realistic and the most complete. Polyphony Digital doesn’t boast that this game will be the best driving game ever, but on the strength of one released PlayStation game many are willing to make that statement. I am one of them.

Not limited by hardware specifications Gran Turismo 2000 will have unprecedented quality in its graphics, and there is the possibility of a physics engine so real that it is, well it produces a driving game that is strangely real. Then there is what could be done with the A.I, courses, cars, everything in this game could be pushed into the realms previously considered fantasy, and all of this on the shelves of Japan by the 4th of March next year. Quite frankly I am worried that this game will be coming out too soon after Gran Turismo 2 for me to have really explored it, I am hoping that a feature that allows you to use cars from GT2 in GT2000 to be in the game, that would be true backwards compatibility.

From a technical standpoint this game has nothing to worry about, but it is what is done with that technology that is key, a straight re-hash of GT2 would not go down to well, no matter how nice it looks. The possibilities opened up by the new controller are interesting though, with every button being analogue, you can now get closer to mimicking the control of a real car with analogue steering, acceleration, breaking and hand braking. This is just one benefit of moving to Sony’s wonder machine.

At the moment there has not been much revealed about this game, probably because they don’t want us to be distracted from Gran Turismo 2, but GT2000 will feature more cars than GT2, it will have more courses, it will be more of the same. But more of a thing that is so near perfection? I’m not complaining.

Come the launch of the PlayStation2 we could be seeing the best driving experience ever created, unleashed in your living room. When I get this game, expect the site to descend into chaos, as I will be playing on this for as many hours a day as humanly possible, despite what physical force Steve may be threatening me with...
