Activision Blizzard Explains Vivendi Sell Offs News

Activision Blizzard's CEO, Bobby Kotick, has explained why the company decided to sell off Vivendi projects...

Ghostbusters: The Videogame

Speaking in a post earnings report conference call, Activision Blizzard's CEO Bobby Kotick has defended the company's decision to sell off Vivendi projects such as Ghostbusters, 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand, and The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena following last year's Activision and Vivendi merger.

"There were a lot of different projects and businesses that we identified as not likely to achieve the profit margin potential that we look for," Kotick said while fielding a question on the matter.

He was then asked whether Activision's strategy of emphasising bigger franchises over lesser known brands factored into the company's decision to sell in-development Vivendi games such as Ghostbusters and 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand, to which he replied:

"With respect to the franchises that don't have the potential to be exploited every year across every platform, with clear sequel potential that can meet our objectives of over time becoming $100 million plus franchises: that's a strategy that has worked very well for us."

"I think generally our strategy has been to focus [on games] . . . that we know if we release today, we'll be working on ten years from now," Kotick continued before going on to explain how unreliable investments in new intellectual properties can be.

"The difficulty in establishing new franchises or unproven franchises, as we've seen over the last 20 years, is one of the great challenges of the business . . .  You still need to have production of new, original intellectual property, but you need to do it very selectively and if you look at the number of new, original intellectual properties successfully launched in the market each year over the last five or ten years, it's a small single digit number."

Spider-Man: Web of Shadows, the twelfth Spider-Man game to be published for consoles by Activision since 2000, was released last month.

Thanks for this review! I was so excited when I heard about this game that I picked up the Real Ghostbusters volume 1 on dvd from amazon to hold me over until the game's release. Sounds like it will be pretty great! Now I'm definitely going to get it.

Poorly written review. Spelling and grammatical errors all over the place. 2/10. Will not read again.

But seriously, if TVG wants to take itself seriously, TVG needs to hire better writers. Discs don't "wur" in the disc drive, they "whir," as in "whirring."

And ending sentences with prepositions? Seriously?

I don't have any problem with Sony getting exclusive rights, it's what happens, it's just the fact it's so late in the day - it just doesn't make that much sense.

wow. thats all i can say. wow. this is bull$hit. why would they hurt a cult classic game like this? if they did what they were supposed to and released it for all systems simultaneously they would have made mass money, but they went and f*cked it all up didnt they? thats why nobody likes sony and ps3. they are a bunch of money hungary wh#res. the only reason they did this is because the 360 and wii are kicking the ps3"s a$$

Killed off my interest in the game.  I'm sure it was gonna just be a mediocre game rescued by the fact it's Ghostbusters, but the Sony exclusivity just doesn't make any sense to me...  What didn't they just pick it up entirely when Activision sold it is beyond me.

sorry why do idiots keep moaning about cult classic movies and games based on them gohtbusts is 1 of my fave films apart from the goonies (was there a game released for that film) or spaceballs (again a starwars rip that was hilarious (i would love to see a game made for that film too) but yet all you idiots moaning about games based on old movies are also waiting patently for the jenesn 88 special in burnout paradise so i guess back to the future movies dont suck then.

yeah yeah yeah modern movies have all this great cg and stuff but starwars games have always been good even if the first films were way back in the 70's i dont see anyone moaning about that now even if there are people out there who dont like starwars.
