This game should offer something for all fighting fans to appreciate.
Gekido is a new 2D fighter set in the style of old classics like Double Dragon and Renegade. Many older gamers will remember such classics as well as Final Fight although a great game to carry on the scrolling fighter legacy has yet to arrive on the Playstation. Gekido from Infogrames is promising to revive the genre and is set in the year 2011.

The plot is centred around the Pegasus Corporation who's virus detection program has malfunctioned and mutated into a new humanoid form. This new being has become stronger and stronger and is set to unleash its power on the defenceless world. The United Government have sent in a group of hackers and experts to investigate this new mutation and bring an end to its reign on Earth. Hence it is your task to face the evil computer as well as confront the host of bad guys out to stop you. Nothing new there then.

Players can pick from one of four motion captured characters in a battle across fully destructable 3D environments- Travis, Michelle, Takada and Ushi. Each character has its own agenda and paths to follow throughout the game which opens up more levels and weapons depending on who you choose. This should give Gekido a lot more replay value. As the plot progresses, more secrets and martial art moves and combos will be available to you. Diabolical enemies will come out at you with their own fighting style and weapons so you will have to keep your wits about you to stay alive.

The game itself is quite huge, boasting 17 missions in all not including multiple paths and a vareity of secrets. Gekido is also not short of weapons either, containing lots of knives and guns to get to grips with. Players of the old Streets of Rage series on Sega's older consoles will recall the crates and other objects to destroy in the background which reveal food as well as weapons. One of the best features of the older games Street of Rage, Double Dragon and Final Fight was the multiplayer mode which has made it into this game so up to four players can compete against each other. Fans of Tekken and the StreetFighter style games have also been catered for, with an Arena Fighting mode included so up to four players can battle it out in an arena.

Overall, Gekido is looking to be an interesting new approach to the fighting genre which appears to offer something to please everyone. Providing all modes are of a high standard, this game should offer something for all fighting fans to appreciate.
