Gears 2's multiplayer will feature 2 extra player slots than the first game and a range of new modes...

Gears of War 2 will cater for up to 10 players with its multiplayer offerings later this year. Additionally, there will be a range of new modes on offer, while combat has also seen significant additions.

Respawning will also be in the game for the first time. One of the newly revealed modes (in this month's X360 mag) called Guerrilla, is basically Assassination from the first game with respawns. However, the game's main focus will still be waiting patiently in the lobby for the next game once you've died the first time around (i.e. there are no re-spawns for the most part).

There's also Wingman, where two players share the same character, and Meatflag, which takes advantage of the game's new Meatshield feature. A varation on capture the flag, Meatflag places one AI character in the map that must be downed and taken back to your base while being used as a Meatshield.

Speaking of downing players, there will also be a wider range of finishing moves in Gears 2. Melee finishes are now more weapon specific (e.g. the sniper rifle can be used as a golf club), while the Y button flips the downed player over so that you can beat them to death. Meatshield is also an option, although it limits your weapon choice to a pistol and the shield is prone to dismemberment after taking enemy fire.

New weapons include the Scorcher (a flamethrower) and Medusa, which is a powerful Locust pistol that fires five or six rounds at a time. Players will also have the option of spawning with the Lancer or Hammerburst, while random weapon respawns across the map will also be a factor (although not for pistols, grenades, or power weapons).

Grenades can now be stuck to any surface (as well as people), turning them into improvised mines. There will also be the new poison gas grenade, while smoke grenades (which you'll still spawn with) have a stun effect on players within their blast radius.

The victor in the new Chainsaw Duels will be the player who taps B the fastest. However, the button mashing mini-game will not be instigated if a chainsaw kill is attempted from behind. Supporting fire from your teammates during these duels will help to sway the battle in your favour.

Similarly to the Meatshield, GoW2's Metal Bucklers will also offer some portable cover in the game. These are indestructible bullet shields, although they limit a player's weapon to a pistol and slow their movement considerably. They can be planted in the ground, but enemies will be able to kick them down if they get close enough.

Epic's Gears sequel will take from Halo 3's successes as well. After dying, players can use a Ghost Cam to take screenshots of the action, which can then be uploaded online. The matchmaking system is also said to borrow from Halo 3's successful formula.

New maps include a remake of the first game's Gridlock (which has become somewhat overgrown). There's also Security, which features a laser security system that can be turned off, and finally River, which comes complete with symmetrical sniper towers.

It certainly sounds as if Epic has got it spot-on with their multiplayer improvements for Gears 2. This is particularly the case with the 10 player slots: while it's certainly a plus to have two extra players, any more might have detracted from Gears' close-knit, team based gameplay.

lol M$ took a risk of releasing a crap and unreliable console but that diddnt stop people buying it, and still today people beleave the 360 is the top selling console thinking its sold over 40 million world wide (out of 40 million 33% have broken, stripped down for parts, or are sitting in game stores as preowned units) the totalnumber of 360's in actual use is closer to 27 million not 42 million lol you fanboys love to exagerate things dont you.

and likewise thr real reason why gears 1 diddnt sell very well on pc is cause epic mad an epic mistake when they ported it accross (no mid or low end pc could run the game pretty much what almost 80% of pc's are low to mid end, a high end pc is close to £800 to build and a top end is over £1000) if gears 1 had more options for lower spec pc's it would have sold more but typical microsoft was only intrested in lining there pockets with more $$$, also another reason why it diddnt sell well is cause of piracy, the game was an easy target for hackers who hacked the DRM.

if you go back to when gears 2 was released cliff said the game would not be comming to pc as if it did hackers would do what they did with gears 1 and make pirate copys and likewise its the same for gears 3.

you can keep your boring exclusive inferiour console game and control method (the 360 pad is a toy compared to pc controlls) the pc is for adults where as the 360 is like a leapfrog, lol you can keep your leapfrog exclusives, there sh** anyway.

id much prefer they placed gears of war 2 on pc and use the DRM of ubisoft, rather than not making one at all which is why i support ubi's uber DRM. if the DRM fails the whole PC-port games from ubi will crash and might end up like Gears of War...

and i was really looking forward for this game in pc, :(

Lol, I love how you PC fanboys keep b*itching about how Gears of War 2 is a 360 exclusive & is never coming other PC. You guys should just STFU! Gears of War 2 is a 360 exclusive & is ALWAYS going to be a 360 exclusive! You want to know why? Because when they released the first Gears of War onto the PC it didn't make them a lot of money. So why should they waste their time & money to make a port that won't make them nearly as much money as the 360 version?

WTF, this is hilarious. I've been consistently having problems finding a match. It usually takes 30 mins for me to find one. I've got great internet connection, I don't have this problem for any other one of my games. Left for Dead 2, COD, NCAA, etc. Only GOW2. I'm doing an experiment, see how long I can be in the lobby for, so far it's been 3 hours 22 minutes and 15 seconds.

This game fn blows. I'm really tempted to just take it out and snap it in half.

F U GOW2

Of course Microsoft wants to make money - it's a business. Also, the reason Gears 2 isn't coming to PC is not because it wants to make money from Xbox 360 exclusivity, but because it doesn't want to LOSE money with a PC release. It took that risk with the first Gears and it didn't pay off then, so why should it now?

These Microsoft people just want to make money from GOW2 by keeping it exculsive to xbox360.
