Rockstar Games' Dan Houser talks about GTA: The Movie, downloadable content and the importance of Space Station Silicon Valley...
In a rare and illuminating interview with Variety's Ben Fritz, Rockstar Games joint founder Dan Houser has talked expressively about everything GTA4 .
Revealing that the original Rockstar North under the guise of DMA quickly "broke down" after the release of GTA 1, Houser explains the key aspects that they wanted to maintain in what eventually became the GTA3 trilogy. Surprisingly revealing that it's the team behind DMA's largely unnoticed Nintendo64 title Space Station Silicon Valley, that provide the main backbone to what eventually became the GTA3 team.
Discussing why you'll never see a GTA movie, Houser claims, "We're not really interested in them doing it. If and when we wanted to do that kind of stuff... One of the things media struggles with about videogames that I'm very clear on in my mind is that it's a team thing. One of the things I've always found weird about movies is they're like, "Here's a movie made by hundreds of people and let's talk to one of the actors.""
Speaking about the ongoing drama unfolding at Rockstar Games' parent company Take-Two Interactive, Houser remains largely unfazed, claiming, "There's been so much drama over so many years and we're still here. I guess we're reasonably immune to it. Sometimes it gets irritating and sometimes you feel bad for the people involved because things get out of control."
"The one thing that whoever is in charge of Take-Two has been cool about," Houser continued, "is understanding that we do a good job of running Rockstar."
Ahead of the forthcoming launch, Houser paints an uncertain and fairly uncommitted picture for the downloadable content, which Microsoft infamously reported paid the princely sum of $50 million for an exclusive period.
"I think it's an experiment. The idea of a world that's you can drop bits into it, that's interesting. But we'll see how it goes. At the moment, there's not much going on with it. We're finishing off the last bits of this one and the only way we can really do this is by really focusing on it."
"But yea, it's interesting. Maybe it's changing and maybe it's not ready," Houser warned, "You don't really know what's happening with that stuff and at the time we'll see what's going on."

lol it may have taken 2 years to get the dlc but at least in that time rockstar have had the chance to iron out the bugs and improve the graphics of the dlc (nice to know M$ wasted $50 million that could have gone into development of a high capasity rom drive upgrade for the 360 oh wasnt that the HD-dvd rom drive they scrapped when blu-ray was claimed victor of the HD movie format) M$ could have used the HD-dvd rom drive for games but decided not to F*****G idiots.

lol VVVVV "o the kid that thinks an xbox 360 or ps3 is more expensive than a gaming computer. Go back to school and learn basic math (like addition and subtraction), you should have been spit out of your moms mouth way back when. Last time I checked, $300 is cheaper than $1,000 dollars. Unless you think a e-machine from kmart is a gaming machine, your dumb. thats 12 year old technology that is probably older than you. go thank your parents who bought you your console because in all honesty, you don't deserve it. I'm surprised you can even turn the damn thing on let alone actually use it." You're right and most gaming consoles are $1000 but thats if you buy them built... rather than making them yourself, like me.
