Sqaure Enix announces Final Fantasy XIII-2 at its 1st Production Division event in Japan...
Sqaure Enix has announced development of a direct sequel to Final Fantasy XIII, titled Final Fantasy XIII-2, at its 1st Production Division event in Japan.
The title has been scheduled for a 2011 release on Xbox 360 and PS3 in Japan, although no plans have been announced to release the game in the West at this stage.
Unlike most sequels in the main Final Fantasy series, which tend to avoid continuity between the stories of previous iterations, Final Fantasy XIII-2 will run as a direct extension to the story from Final Fantasy XIII. The title appears to be set in a similar format to the releases of Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2 on the PlayStation 2 in that regard.
A new character will be introduced in this sequel and can be seen on the left-hand side of the logo (shown above right) next to Lightning, a returning character from FFXIII.
More as we get it...

Update: Square Enix has now confirmed over on the US PlayStation Blog that Final Fantasy XIII-2 will be released in the West this year, with a "winter" launch being pegged on the title at this stage.
