Bethesda Softworks announce agreement with Interplay to develop and publish Fallout 3…

Long suffering Fallout fans can today mark this date in their calendars, as confirmation comes that the â??on-offâ? Fallout 3 will finally be completed and released under an agreement between Bethesda Softworks and Interplay.

Under the terms of the agreement, the creator behind the legendary Elder Scrolls series will develop and publish Fallout 3, having licensed the rights from Interplay Entertainment. The agreement grants Bethesda exclusive worldwide rights to the Fallout franchise on the PC, home consoles, handhelds, and other media, with the option to develop and publish additional sequels.

â??Weâ??re extremely excited about this opportunity and what it means both for Bethesda and for Fallout fans around the world,â? said Vlatko Andonov, president of Bethesda Softworks. â??Fallout is one the great RPG franchises. Millions of Fallout games have been sold worldwide, and fans have been eagerly awaiting the release of a Fallout 3 title. Bethesdaâ??s proven expertise in this genre, building on our experience and the tremendous success we have enjoyed with our cutting-edge Elder Scrolls® series, will enable us to create the next chapter of Fallout that is worthy of the franchise.â?

Itâ??s believed that Bethesda will develop Fallout 3 alongside the next chapter in the Elder Scrolls series under the careful guidance of Todd Howard, who claimed â??We are overjoyed. Fallout is one of my favorite games, and we plan to develop a visually stunning and original game for Fallout 3 with all the hallmarks of a great RPG: player choice, engaging story, and non-linearity.â?

Itâ??s not yet known whether the preliminary work undertaken by Black Isle Studios on Fallout 3 will be used (first screens), or whether Todd and his team plan to start from scratch; weâ??ll have more information soon.

i hope fallout 4 is running off a stable skyrim engine and follows the story from fallout 3 right after you defeated the enclave only this time your in a different city, i know its been overused but new york state would be a perfect location to continue the story plus i miss the metro tunnels so new york is an ideal location.

The Bethesda studio that developed Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim, and Fallout 3 previously never worked on any of those projects simultaneously - there's no reason to assume they'd start doing that now.

i would have though the next fallout game would run off the skyrim engine just like fallout 3 running off the oblivion engine, 3 years is an unrealistic time scale 1 or 2 years is more realistic as for all we know fallout 4 could have been in development alongside skyrim but kept hidden which would have been very easy given the scale of intrest in skyrim up untill launch (lol now you can breathe, my grammer is poor i know.).

@Post 138: I guess it's possible that Bethesda could have decided to farm out the next Fallout to another developer again, as they did with Obsidian on New Vegas. If so, it's possible the next Fallout could arrive within the next year or two I guess.

If Bethesda Softworks are planning on making Fallout 4 next though, then it'll be a good three years at least before it's released. The gap between Fallout 3 and Skyrim was three years, and there's the added complication of next-gen consoles to factor-in this time.

Well since Skyrim finally came out, fallout 4 should be the next project bethesda is working on, plus since new vegas came out a while back it's gotta be about time for a new one, any idea what city is the lucky one to be laid waste too?

@Post 136: You may have to make do with New Vegas to be honest as it could be a long wait for the next Fallout from Bethesda Softworks - the studio only just finished work on Skyrim after all...
