Over 5mins of Fable in exclusive action, showing the new combat system and the games wonderful visuals in full effect...
Making up for some of the disappointment of the recent X’03 event, the ever-charismatic Pete Molyneux and his team at Lionhead and Big Blue Box delivered a fantastic demonstration of ‘Fable’ in action.

The demonstration allowed us to view the combat system for the first time, an aspect that Molyneux assures us will deliver more then the button-bashing tedium usually associated in this type of game. By checking out the video footage, you’ll notice magic spells being linked with sword attacks quickly and effectively. We’re hoping that this doesn’t turn out to be the usual Molyneux hype, despite looking impressive it did seem that the player was just tapping buttons at the end of the day, however we’ll reserve judgement until we actually get to play the game ourselves.

Molyneux went on to claim that ‘Fable’ would allow you to do anything in the game world; be good, be bad, marry and start a family or become the true hero. It seems that the team have worked hard on ensuring that a tightly-nit story is there to push players through the game and eradicate any problems with aimlessly wandering around, whilst Molyneux was keen to stress the ‘branch-meet-branch’ mechanic that’s being employed will ensure that all players get to see the most important scenes within the game and don’t miss out on anything.

In one of his trademark ‘examples’, Molyneux described a situation that a tester unexpectedly found himself upon and promptly made us want this game even more then ever. Apparently a tester working for Lionhead, married the Mayor’s daughter in a particular town. In the dead of night, the tester decided to kill the Mayor without anyone knowing. His death meant that his daughter inherited everything he owned, and so the tester then killed the mayor’s daughter and inherited the Mayor’s fortunes himself. Apparently this surprised everybody within the team; hopefully it’s not just an exaggeration and a sign of what depths to expect from the game.

We’ll have a lot more on ‘Fable’ soon; but until then make sure to check out over 5mins of exclusive video footage of the game in action by hitting the link.
