F-Zero X

F-Zero X

Belt up and hold on to your teeth cause it’s time to race. F-Zero first appeared on the SNES way back at the console’s launch and changed games forever. This time it’s on the N64 and promises to make the same impact as the first.

Well the first thing that you will notice about this game is its speed. This game really shifts and it does so with loads of vehicles on screen as well. This explains the simplistic graphics of the vehicles and track. There is no way this game could have been so fast if the track detail was beefed up. Anyway the look and designs of the tracks do work very well and take you upside down, twists you around and shoots you about at speeds that could kill.

The usual futuristic sound effects are present and the music mostly consists of “kick ass” rock tunes with a futuristic edge. This works reasonably well for the game and creates the perfect atmosphere for the comic book type look the game displays.

The basic idea is to race and finish first but there are a few other tricks to learn that will help you on your way. The tracks have speed up arrows that are found in Wipeout and after completing one lap the ability to speed boost at will becomes available, however use this feature sparingly as it wears down your energy each time you use it. You can also use the Z trigger and the shoulder buttons to your advantage as well, letting you ram fellow races and omit them from the rest of the race. The cars handle very well and each vehicle has it’s own characteristics and perform better on specific tracks. This works well and finding a vehicle that suits your style and preference of play won’t take too much time at all. F-Zero is definitely easy to get into.

There are many tracks available and the ones later on really give you a run for your money. It will take quite a while to master the game enough to be able to unlock all of the cars, but it is worth it. What really keeps the game alive however is the four-player mode. The game remains just as fast and as you would expect is a lot more fun when you can smash your friends into little pieces rather than a computer controlled player.

This is without a doubt the best futuristic racer on the N64 and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who loves racing games in general. To get the most fun out of it the Four-player mode is a must, just as with most of the truly great N64 games. Overall the game looks great, plays great and is worthy of a place in any N64 owner’s collection

Jamie Filmer
