Chart Attack: Total War Dominates Feature
SEGA and The Creative Assembly's tactical masterpiece knocks aside Killzone 2 and Halo Wars...
By Chris LeytonPosted: 10/03/2009
SEGA and The Creative Assembly's Empire: Total War crushed all before it to establish the PC's first All Format No.1 for the week ending March 7th - the first PC title to take the crown since Football Manager 2008 back in October 2007.
Brushing aside the rivalry between last week's KillZone 2 and Halo Wars, Empire: Total War becomes the best selling title in the series to date, notching up sales of almost double that recorded for Rome: Total War and Medieval II: Total War. We really enjoyed taking over the world and salute The Creative Assembly's latest tactical masterpiece.
Despite sales of Killzone 2 dropping by 58% compared to last week, Sony's PS3 blockbuster still managed to compete for the top spot, dropping into No.2 by only 1,600 units behind SEGA's chart topper.
Providing undeniable proof that we all have good intentions in the UK (but then again so is the road to hell), Wii Fit manages to take the bronze with a 31% surge in sales week-on-week. So much is the demand for the Balance Board that it prevented the week's solitary other new release, Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X, into the fourth spot, despite debuting at No.2 in the Xbox 360 and PS3 charts respectively. We won't mention the failure of the GameCube re-releases to even make a dent, with Mario Power Tennis (a four year old game) appearing at No.23.
A 54% reduction in sales saw even the weight of Halo's appeal decline substantially, with Halo Wars dropping from No.2 to No.5, while Professor Layton and the Curious Village continues to keep us intrigued, securing its position of No.6 in the Top 10. Street Fighter IV continued its drop from the upper echelons of the chart, with sales dropping by 59% compared to last week to hold onto the seventh spot (make sure to enter our competition and win a copy).
Finally the bottom places of the All Format Top 10 were held by the constant appearance of FIFA 09 and Call of Duty: World at War, No.8 and 9 respectively, while Ben 10: Alien Force proved there's some life left in the PS2 yet at No.10.
Sales by Format
A slight decline in the number of Xbox 360 titles featured in the Top 40 by individual formats highlighted the two categories of formats that largely make up the UK charts.
The number of positions held by Xbox 360, Wii, PS3 and DS titles hovered between 8-10, which despite the success of Empire: Total War contrasts positions of PC and PS2 titles that largely manage to feature more than 3 positions - but of course spare a thought for the poor PSP, which has still yet to notch up a single Top 40 title for the year, LittleBigPlanet, Rock Band, and God of War can't come soon enough!

'Where "should" reenforcements come then?'
Wherever they were placed on the campaign map should be indicative of where they appear within the battle. A secondary army placed directly behind my main should not spawn onto the battle map directly behind my enemy's army, though this is widely the case.
"And I've had plenty of occasions when the AI has retreated."
This is either a lie or a misunderstanding of terms. The AI will "rout" on the battle map when defeated/overwhelmed. The AI does not retreat in campaign map situations; like 20 full assorted units meeting one half strength unit.
"Empire: Total War has been universally acclaimed, but individual complains will always happen"
As far as reviews from those paid by a larger company (gamespy, gamenet, tvg, etc) you're right, they're overly positive. Player-written reviews, as far as I have read, have been littered with the comments echoed here - bugs, broken- and missing content, permanently-corrupted saves - take your pick.
The only game i've ever seen that compared to this one's level of buggedlybrokenness is Daikatana - woe betide purchasers thereof.

Oh yeah? And where did you get that juicy morsel from? Can't see it myself, seeing as no Total War game has been released for a console.

I found the naval combat in general pretty hit-and-miss...

a large fleet is too hard to manage.

Rarely had an issue with CTD, perhaps once. It's unfair to label this as a fault, as this is most often caused by problems with individual setups.
Empire: Total War has been universally acclaimed, but individual complains will always happen.
Sounds like you should just take your copy back and get a refund, as you're obviously not happy with it.

What the hell kind of awful review is THIS? Did you even play the game, Mr. Reviewer? Did they pay you with freebies. Did the shine blind you?
1. AI can`t do sea invasions. You are invincible as England.
2. Reinforcements don`t come where they should on battlemaps.
3. Diplomacy is useless.
3 Loads of other AI uselesness, like the enemy never retreats even if outnumbered10\1.
4. Loads of cTDs, sounds issues etc.
Plus a helluva a lot more, too many to write here. The only good stuff are the land and ship battles, but alone it is not enough if Campaign Ai is crap!
And if you rated the game on what it might be like in the future, WE want to know what it`s like NOW! It`s our money we spend, not yours.
The game deserves 6\10 and you deserve 2/10 for the review.

This game is a disaster full of game breaking crashes and errors. I don't know how a positive review can be justified.

Why can't you play it, admitedly STEAM has issues but I can't see why it's stopping you from playing.
