EA announces its answer to Nintendo's Wii Fit, offering a more Westernised approach to exercise...

We've already seen publishers such as Deep Silver and Atari try to emulate Wii Fit's success but now it seems EA is making its bid for a slice of the energetic pie with EA Sports Active.

The game, which is currently slated for a Spring 2009 release on Wii, incorporates a leg strap for the Nunchuk while players will hold the Wii Remote in their hand for a range of 20 exercises that include bicep curls and shoulder presses.

As well as cardio exercise drills, there will also be plenty of upper and lower body workouts that gamers will be able to chose for their 20 minute daily routines. As the game's 30 day programme progresses, the intensity of these exercises will increase in order for users to reach their fitness goals.

EA seems to be plugging the game as a Western alternative to Wii Fit's Eatsern style of exercise that focuses on balance and agility. In other words, expect EA Sports Active's personal trainer to shout slogans at you like "Go for the burn", "Reach the top", or "five more you weedy excuse for a human" (that last one may just have been our old gym teacher).

As well as the Nunchuk leg straps, the game will also come packaged with a Resistance Band (for Wii Remote aided bicep curls etc.) and a Health & Wellness book. EA Sports Active will also have added Balance Board functionality.
