Keeping kids happy during the summer holidays, Square-Enix’ latest title in the series gets off to a healthy start...

A press release issued yesterday to highlight the fact that Dragon Quest IX has been keeping the kids happy during the summer holidays has revealed that the game has shifted over 50,000 copies in the UK since it’s release on July 23rd.

To put it into some comparison the game managed to shift 2.4 million copies in Japan during the opening weekend alone.  However it’s worth noting that the Dragon Quest series has always been a cultural phenomenon in Japan and it’s not until Dragon Quest VIII that the series first appeared in the UK.

The series has shifted a staggering 53 million copies in Japan alone, where legislation enforces games in the series to be released on a Saturday instead of the traditional Wednesday to prevent truancy and sickies.

A lack of transparency in UK sales data makes Dragon Quest IX success hard to compare, but to give some perspective MCV released data for the Top 10 games based by sales in the UK during the six month period from January-June 2010.

  1. Just Dance - 940.358
  2. Red Dead Redemption - 819,161
  3. Bad Company 2 - 590,580
  4. Modern Warfare 2 - 540,761
  5. Wii Fit Plus - 499,998
  6. Wii Sports Resort - 439,920
  7. 2010 FIFA World Cup - 396,858
  8. Aliens vs Predator - 359,968
  9. Final Fantasy XIII - 339,996
  10. FIFA 10 - 318,719

AWSOME!!! Square's actually made a smart move. Final fantasy III for the DS was really successful (heck I even know some people who brought it on ebay before it came out in England) so I reckon Dragon Quest IX will be just as successful. And, if Square's lucky, even more!!!

What are you on about??? This side of the PS2, the DS is the most succesful console out there - this makes perfect sense, I can't wait for it and judging from the screens it's looking pretty tight to DQ8...

Square-Enix doesn't waste any time -- there's already comercials on TV here in Japan about it.
