Consumer group dismisses the effects of regular brain exercise software; surfing the web and conversations work just as well...
Thinking about stimulating your mind with one of many 'brain trainers' on the market for Nintendo DS in order to stave off the signs of cerebral old age? Well it seems that the latest research into the effects of titles like Dr Kawashima's Braining Training has proved that there's at best weak evidence to show they actually work.
The latest research, conducted by consumer group Which?, has shown that many of the positive claims about brain trainers is actually false. Showcasing the products in front of several neuroscientists, Which?'s report has suggested that the same levels of blood flow to the frontal cortex of the brain – said to enhance memory – could be achieved by just surfing the web and engaging in conversations.
Speaking to the BBC, Dr Chris Bird, a clinical neuroscientist at University College London added: "There is no evidence that using this product will have any functional impact on your life whatsoever".
The findings come amidst a flurry of reports looking into the effects of brain training, including recent findings from France that showed the software didn't work when tested by children.
