Valve announces development of a sequel to the Warcraft III mod, Defense of the Ancients...

Following months of speculation, Valve has officially announced that it's developing a full sequel to the Warcraft III mod, Defense of the Ancients. Dota 2 will be arriving for PC and Mac platforms next year.

The RTS/RPG crossbreed, which casts players as individual, upgradeable hero characters amid vast battles of AI bots, started off life as a Warcraft III mod all the way back in 2003. Much as it did with Team Fortress 2, Valve is now embracing this fan-built game with a sequel title that's set to be released at retail.

'IceFrog', the publicly anonymous developer who's been developing Dota since 2005, has been brought on-board at Valve to develop the sequel, while an exclusive reveal over on Game Informer's site dishes out a load of detail on Dota 2's direction.

More as we get it...
