Wright Bagwell insists that Dead Space 2's Unitology religion is not a pop at Scientology...

The Creative Director of Dead Space 2, Wright Bagwell has confronted suggestions that the game's fictional Unitology religion is a parody of Scientology.

Speaking to MTV Multiplayer, Bagwell insisted, "We never really approach that discussion with the intention of poking fun at a particular religion, or sort of making a social statement about something that's going on right now."

"For us, Unitology's purpose in the story represents people's illogical thinking about things they don't understand," he continued. "It was never really intended to be a jab at any particular religion. I know people have said, 'Oh yeah, it's a jab at Scientology.' It was never really intended. I think people get that a lot because the name is very similar."

The link is an obvious one to make for any gamers who've played either of the Dead Space titles, or read the series' extended fiction. Unitology sounds a bit like Scientology, they're both cults exhibiting freakish levels of fanaticism, and the sci-fi themes of Dead Space could be perceived in a similar light to the works of L. Ron Hubbard that Scientology is based on.

That said, the Unitologists in Dead Space are actually reacting to very real phenomena that the human race cannot explain. Scientologists, on the other hand, worship completely nonsensical theories that have no basis in reality (we're throwing out our impartiality on this one).

Bagwell went on to explain more about the reasoning behind Unitology: "It was really just an observation about what can happen to anybody who is fanatical and illogical about their beliefs."

It does have multiplayer, confirmed in the initial Game Informer reveal last year. No details have been shared yet though...

properly looking forward to it!  completely loved dead space, the story, the graphics, the atmosphere, everything.  is it rumours that dead space 2 has multiplayer or is that fact?  not that it matters if the single player is a stunning as the originals!  8-)

this is my fav game franchise, for my money it has a story better than all other games, and as good as most tv/movies, because i want to know more about the story not just gameplay, i love the comics, the feature, and the little virals and audio logs sort of like what lost did

Yes, but the studio that made it is an internal EA studio (EA Redwood Shores, now Visceral Games), so technically we should be applauding EA for Dead Space. Anyway, even if they did just publish it from a third-party dev, then they still would have had a lot of say regarding the game's direction. Give a companuy credit where it's deserved for crying out loud!
