Conkers Bad Fur Day Review

Conkers Bad Fur Day

By Stephen Leyton

After a particularly heavy night on the beer, Conker finds himself in a strange land - with a severe hangover (yes we've all been down that street). Pulling himself together and stumbling around, Conker is then made aware of the 'Context Sensitive Button'. Which is a panel on the floor, when activated it gives Conker whatever he needs for a certain situation. So with that in mind Conker gets set for his adventure, one of the many bad guys he will face are, poo monsters, Scouse dung beetles, killer bees, evil robot teddy bears, rabid dog fish to name but a few. Using the 'Context Sensitive Button’ Conker can easily accomplish his tasks, for instance, being gifted with a pair of machine guns to take down the baddies, or drinking excessive amounts of alcohol so that Conker can pee on the first monsters. Nice!

Rare really have gone to town with the development of this game, it’s a fair statement to say that, it’s all well and good to put this kind of humor into a game but without a plot and gameplay it really is a waste of time. But would we expect anything less than amazing from Rare? Of course not!

As you get into the game you notice certain things that you’ve seen or heard before for example the, ‘Saving Private Ryan’ style mission. Looking fantastic but incredibly gross, and clearly mimics the obvious scenes from the movie. Conker is a general sailing on a war ship with many other Squirrels. When suddenly the boat docks in, within seconds of leaving the boat Conker’s teammates are being shot down by enemy fire. It’s actually quite stunning how the game mimics the film even down to one of the soldiers walking along and picking his arm up of the floor. The game slows down (deliberately), the noise gets all distorted and you know it shouldn’t be funny, it really shouldn’t but somehow it is. Saving Private Ryan isn’t the only film that Rare have mimicked in CBFD, there are others like the Matrix, which is fantastic. It really is quite amazing how the atmosphere of the movies has been captured in Conker’s Bad Fur Day. The sound work is spot on, the camera angles are identical, and even though it is portrayed in an Adult Humor fashion it works really well.

There’s a vast amount of different game styles in Conker’s Bad Fur Day, which when put together makes a fantastic adventure game for your Nintendo 64. When you’re fed up with the single player missions you can take some of your friends on in the multi-player deathmatch area, aka GoldenEye. There is a huge selection of funny weapons to choose from, making playing with friends an enjoyable Friday night gaming experience.

What more can you ask for, instead of going out on Friday night for your usual surplus of Larger and quite possibly Chicken Vindaloo. Get yourself a copy of Conker’s Bad Fur Day. Gets some mates round and be prepared for one of the, if not the greatest 3D Platform games ever.
