Following a brief appearance on Twitter EA has officially announced the development of Command & Conquer 4...

Concluding the Tiberium Wars saga, Command & Conquer 4 promises a host of innovations that will compliment the series fast and fluid gameplay.  Features first uncovered in an online survey include class-based gameplay, mobile bases and persistent player progression through all of the game's modes.

Set in the year 2062, the story takes place after the events of Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars and finds humanity on the brink of extinction.  With only six years left until Tiberium renders the entire world inhabitable, the two timeless opposing factions - The Brotherhood of Nod and the Global Defence Initiative - find themselves united to fight for the same cause.  Nod's enigmatic leader Kane sets off to the GDI headquarters, but his plans are as-of-yet unknown.  Signalling the end of the saga, Command & Conquer 4 promises to answer the questions that the 15-year old series has posed: the fate of Earth, Nod, the GDI and most significantly Kane's motivations behind his decade-long plan.

Featuring two campaigns behind the GDI and Nod which can be played in single-player or co-op, Command & Conquer 4 will also feature a new 5v5 objective-based multiplayer mode.

Command & Conquer 4 is slated for a PC release in 2010.  There's currently no word on whether the title will head to the consoles, though given the fact that both Command & Conquer 3 and Red Alert 3 appeared on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation3, we suspect this announcement to follow later.
