A new game engine heralds a long list of additions and improvements with the development of Civilization V...

"An entirely new combat system, deeper diplomatic interactions and a cavalcade of expanded features," await us with confirmation that Civilization V is currently in development for the PC at Firaxis Studios.

The long-awaited return of a video game classic boasts an entirely new game engine and promises to take the series in new directions with the introduction of hexagon tiles allowing for deeper strategy, more realistic gameplay and stunning organic landscapes for players to explore as they expand their empire.

Fully animated leaders, screen-filling diplomatic scenes, characters speaking in their native languages and ranged bombardment also fill the list of improvements and additions.

No word on when the game is planned for release, although today's announcement does confirm that the game will ship with an extensive range of community, modding and multiplayer elements.
