NCSoft's super-villain MMO to utilise the power of the physics card from AGEIA...
In a joint statement, NCSoft and AGEIA have today confirmed that MMO City of Villains will be utilising the power of AGEIA's PhysX physics accelerator card in the future, which the aim of introducing a new further level of detail into the game than ever before.
Though the implementation won't affect gamers without the card, those with the PhysX accelerator will experience new intricacies including physics particles being affected by external forces or leaves falling from trees when an explosion occurs near by.
"City of Villains players with PhysX-based Physics Accelerator add-in boards in their PCs will be blown away by the added realism and immersiveness of the game," said Michael Lewis, CEO of Cryptic Studios. "While the ability to succeed in the game will be unaffected, the overall user experience will be greatly enhanced through support for the AGEIA PhysX processor."
"The team at Cryptic Studios is among the most talented in the business, and it's exciting to see them apply their wizardry using AGEIA PhysX technology," said Kathy Schoback, vice president of content acquisition at AGEIA. "City of Villains is already a one-of-a-kind game experience, but the action acceleration of the AGEIA PhysX processor will take it to an entirely new level."
It's been over ten years since the dawn of the 3D era heralded the introduction of the first graphics accelerators, and now it seems that we could be on the cusp of the next evolution, especially as more and more games utilise various physics engines in their development.
We'll have more news shortly...

They still won't learn though. They talk about bonuses, but still won't say what the bonuses are. So the bonus will be :Slight increase to Accuracy. What is slight? 2%? 5%? And for that matter, what was Accuracy in the first place? They will say Slight Reduction to Recharge Time...what was my recharge time to begin with? in CoH/CoV you have a character sheet without numbers and you play blind. Can you imagine sitting at a pen and paper session with the DM telling you that you have Good Agility and Average Strength? But the Average Strength actually works out to be more than Good Agility, although you'd never know without agonising hours of trial and error. A common example: The DM rolls the dice behind his little screen for all your actions then announces that you miss all your ranged attacks. Player: But I thought I had Good Dexterity you say. DM: Yes well actually...*whispers* If you really really want to know, and you don't have to you bad bad number cruncher you...Good Dexterity is actually a number between 6 and 8..for Dexterity. But it's a number between 10 and 14 for Strength though. Player: But if I'd known that I wouldn't have bothered to get the sword of Strength, I'd have gotten the Sword of Superior Agility! DM: *waves hand dismisively* Oh...never mind...we're having fun here.Besides, I change the numebers from patch to patch anyways. Player: Yes but that doesn't matter, you can still tell me what they are, you know what they are. DM: Bah..you think I want you figuring everything out? Ok so anyways ,the monster attacks...*hidden dice roll*...Ok you're hit..for 20 damage. You're dead. Player: What!? 20 Damage? What about my Resistances? DM: Oh..well..your resistance wasn't really that high. It was just Moderate. Player: So now I'm dead? If I'd know what my resistance REALLY was I would have made different choices! DM: Bah! Now you're talking like a power gamer. What does it matter...you get teleported back to the city...go back and run the whole mission again. Or better yet, you can stand and fight this same monster 100 times with different items and through trial and error try to guess your actual resistance, and then tell everyone else. We're teaching you scientific reasoning here too,you can take these skills to the bank man! Course...whatever number you figure out will probably change with the next patch. Ha! Ha! Ha! Player: But..But.. That's CoH/CoV. That's called : 'Casual Play Friendly'. -Veteran Rewards CoH/CoV Player, 18 Months.
