By Chris Leyton on 06/11/2002 The latest version in the acclaimed Champ Man series is heading exclusively to the Xbox. The Championship Manager series is the definition of fanaticism; simply put you either love it or hate it there is no in-between. It’s easy to understand why people might look past the appeal of the series, in this day-and-age of vertex-shaders and per-pixel rendering, how can pages of text and numbers hold it’s head high. You only have to take one look at the outrage caused when Eidos announced that Championship Manager 3 02/03 would be an Xbox exclusive, and witness the hysteria that was evident when the first Championship Manager 4 screens and info became available.

Put simply the Championship Manager series have always offered the most detailed football management experience you could possibly wish for. Over 150,000 players from around the world have been meticulously researched and included in the game; every club from Manchester United to Macclesfield is in the game waiting for you to take charge and guide them to glory.

This latest seasonal upgrade to the highly acclaimed Championship Manager 3 offers very few additions to the series, however the only reason you need to check it out is that it features all of the latest signings; Ferdinand is bolstering Manchester United’s flailing defence, whilst Liverpool’s African contingent has increased with the summer signings of El Diouf, it’s all a Champ Man fiend needs.

Navigating through the various menus has been thoroughly thought out and is well suited to the Xbox controller. Different buttons take you to key menus such as your news section and to progress through the game, whilst the analogue stick makes a reasonable replacement for a mouse. One major issue that we’ve got with the console translation is that there is no hotkey for going back, a feature you’ll use constantly whilst progressing through the various menus. This omission is made even more bizarre by the fact that the B button currently does nothing, B-BACK, makes sense doesn’t it?
