Activision CEO, Bobby Kotick talks candidly about a subscription-based online world for Call of Duty...
Are CoD subscriptions a potential rip-off or an exciting prospect?
Activision has been hinting heavily towards MMO-style, online subscriptions for its Call of Duty franchise over the last year or so, but now the company's CEO and President, Bobby Kotick has spoken more candidly on the issue than ever before.
In response to a question from the Wall Street Journal about what single change he would make to Activision if he could just snap his fingers to make it happen, Kotick responded:
"I would have Call of Duty be an online subscription service tomorrow. When you think about what the audience's interests are and how you could really satisfy bigger audiences with more inspired, creative opportunities, I would love to see us have an online Call of Duty world. I think our players would just have so much of a more compelling experience."
When pushed as to whether this subscription service will be coming to the CoD series, Kotick replied, "Hopefully", before going on to explain why he thinks Call of Duty players will welcome it:
"I think our audiences are clamouring for it. If you look at what they're playing on Xbox Live today, we've had 1.7 billion hours of multiplayer play on Live. I think we could do a lot more to really satisfy the interests of the customers. I think we could create so many things, and make the game even more fun to play. We haven't really had a chance to do that yet, so that would be my snap of the fingers."

@Post 96: Yep, you and 20 million other gamers, but how long will they put up with RRP increases, 1200 Microsoft Point map packs, and the introduction of subscription charges?

lol the £55 rrp wont stand as we all know game, gamestation, blockbuster, tesco, asda ect wiil all sell cod for £45 and the hardend eddition only idiot's will buy it (all you get is another book and a few pointless extras) plus as soon as youve completed the game when you try to trade it youll get maybe £2 or £3 more than the standard version, only die hards will keep the hardened versions but most will try to get the even more ridculous prestige editions.
Â
oh yeah sorry i diddnt say in my previous post but i was talking about the rrp for the entire console games rrp not for a select few games that activision has slapped its own rrp on (for activision rrp stands for "retarded ripoff price").

@Post 93: I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the RRP for standard edition of CoD: Black Ops is actually £55 rather than the usual £50. Like with Modern Warfare 2 before, Activision is enforcing a £5 price hike on the standard UK RRP.
This bothers me a lot more than the Collectors Edition stuff. With the Hardened and Prestige Editions, Activision is merely offering a choice for avid collectors. If you just want to buy the regular game though, it seems you're forced to paythe extra £5.
Still, if gamers keep buying Call of Duty games in their droves like they have been over the past few years, then Activision will keep the price at £55. That's just supply and demand.

well thanks a lot activision you started a trend with collecters edditions MW2 £120, black ops £130 even poly phony's got in on the biggest rip off with GT5 £150 when will we see a collecters eddition costing over £200 and a bunch of idiot's defending it, how can a radio controlled car or a leather wallet demand such a retarded price, yes the game's rrp is £50 but why the £70-£100 price hike, ie the NVG's in MW2 were crappy plastic and diddnt work that well and certainly diddnt deserve its £120 price (only a month after release cex dropped the trade price by half) these days collector edditions dont deserve the asking price.

I will definately NOT be purchasing this game if there is a subscription fee! I have all 3 gaming systems and I already refuse to pay to go online with the Xbox 360 when the other consoles are free! It is already really lame of Microsoft to charge for playing online. So, now the people that do have an xbox and pay for online gaming will also have to pay to play COD?? Sorry, but IMO thats pretty lame! I spoke to quite a few gamers that are fans or their kids are fans of COD personally about them charging a subscription fee and not one of them said they will purchase the game if they do! I'm sure they will still get rich from it! But, its a shame that there will be a lot of people that wont get to experience the new game if they do!

It's funny when a company starts to get very big and make tons of $ off of the fans because they make a good game. They now seize the opportunity to charge a monthly fee when everyone is enjoying it so much. What Activision doesn't understand is that we know when we're being taken advantage of. if they charge this monthly fee, now or in the future, all we have to do is start buying a different war game. When that new gaME'S co. starts to make enough $, they will probably make better n better games just like CofD. It's amazing that they want to charge a monthly fee, but can't put more $ into development to stop the glitching and cheating which ruins the experience for the people who want to truly play the game right. So Activision, if you have the gumption to charge a monthly fee, atleast have the gumption to fix the issues that hardcore seriois fans have to put up with with each new release. If we as consumers stick together, we can either make (as WE already have), or break the company.
