Braveheart Review

By John Meyer III on 01/01/1970

Braveheart, watch the movie, listen to the soundtrack, now play the game.

Graphics –
This game has the eggs, and the ham, but not the skillet.
The interaction menu was very plain and simple. Nothing elaborate can be found here.
Simple graphics that can be seen in older RPG games. Once an action sequence begins, it map appear in the glory of 3D, but only if stopped. There wasn’t enough action to be as convincing as the movie was that there was an actual war going on. The control of the camera angles during these scenes was also ridiculous.

Sound –
Soundtrack was repetitive, and lacked the Celtic essence from the movie, enough said. As for sound effects, there was a lack in fluidity. The sound was chopped up, like a piece of sushi. It would cut in and out, although this may be a driver problem, I think it may be bugs from the game. Using three different sound cards, I had similar problems. (Creative Labs SB Live, SB Awe64, Diamond MX300.)

Gameplay –
The battle scenes played like Myth, only Myth was fun to play. The controls were confusing, and troublesome. It was frustrating learning the controls, and once learned, the controls were awkward. The game is a typical map based strategy RPG game. Starting with a map, train your troops, and generals, and then place them in locations you wish to guard/protect/attack. Then if lucky, another army will come attack and you can watch the action.

Overall –
Strategy fans, you have a winner, if you get any other game. This game was a waste of the CD it was created on. Braveheart was a great movie. If you saw the movie and are looking forward to a great game based on the movie it will never happen. I often try not to rip too hard on any game I review, no matter how bad it is. So it must be understood that this review fits the typical tradition of most games that are designed based on a movie or other video/comic medium. A good majority of games based on movies/television/comic, are bad. However, there are the exceptions.--(James Bond, Golden Eye…N64).

Reviewer\'s Machine:
PII-400
16MB Viper550 TNT
128MB SD-RAM
SB-Live
