SEGA delays Platinum Games' Bayonetta until 2010, when it will arrive on the Western market in January...

Considering the sheer number of games that have been re-aligned with 2010 launch windows having originally been scheduled for autumn 2009, the post-Christmas period is starting to look like the Christmas run-up, and vice-versa. Are publishers really that scared of Modern Warfare 2?

The latest game to slot into a Q1 2010 launch window is SEGA and Platinum Games' Bayonetta, which will now be released in January 2010 as opposed to its previously slated autumn 2009 window. The title is still releasing in Japan this year though, where it's scheduled to go on sale this October 29th.

In the West, Bayonetta will join a number of blockbuster games in early 2010 including BioShock 2, Max Payne 3, Red Dead Redemption, Singularity, Heavy Rain, MAG, and quite possibly God of War III (although Sony is yet to officially confirm an ETA for Kratos' return beyond fiscal 2009/2010).

"Bayonetta is an extremely important new IP for SEGA and adds a new level of depth to our growing portfolio," said SEGA West president Mike Hayes. "As a result of market analysis, we have taken a Publishing decision that January 2010 is the optimum release time in the Western Markets to maximise this exciting new title's potential."

Looks like we'll be asking for vouchers rather than games this Christmas.

Bayonetta marks a great start to the decade for games and it's also a start to the decade that's littered with other hack 'n slash games (i.e. the better-than-expected Darksiders, Dante's Inferno, and God of War III).

It's certainly a welcome return of the genre when there was only one game of this type (Batman: Arkham Asylum) worth shouting about last year.

But which one will be the best when the dust settles later this year? My money is on God of War III with Bayonetta coming in a very close second place.
