EA unveils a new free to play Battlefield game and reveals details of the advance closed beta...

EA has announced a new free to play entry in the Battlefield series entitled Battlefield Play4Free, which will launch for PC in spring 2011.

Content will be a mishmash of previous games in the series, with maps from Battlefield 2 and weapons/classes based on Battlefield: Bad Company 2.

Weapon and vehicle models are being recycled from earlier games, with a playable assortment of attack helicopters, jet fighters and tanks at your disposal across 32-player online battles.

The obligatory upgrade system - said to 'simulate the development of a career soldier' - allows you to unlock new combat abilities and weapons using in-game currency, although no details have yet been released about how real money payments will feed into the system.

Battlefield Heroes, Play4Free's cartoony younger brother, was criticised for lacking balance and providing game-breaking advantages to 'premium' players, so it will be interesting to see if EA can get the balance right with this new, more serious entry. Sign-ups for the closed beta can be found here, and go live on November 30th.
